Convatec:
Company Overview
ConvaTec was founded in 1978 based on two products designed to improve the quality of life for a special group of people: those with ostomies. One of the initial products, Stomahesive® skin barrier, was a remarkable improvement over existing methods of protecting the skin around the surgical opening (stoma) created on the abdomen of an ostomy patient. Stomahesive skin barrier led to another major innovation - the Sur-Fit® system. For the first time, people with ostomies could change their ostomy pouches without having to remove the adhesive wafer around the stoma every time, thereby minimizing potential skin discomfort. With the introduction of additional ostomy products, ConvaTec is now the world leader in the ostomy market.
In 1982, ConvaTec utilized its skin care technology to launch a second core business - in the wound care field - by introducing DuoDERM® Hydroactive® Dressing. The concept of creating a moist environment under an occlusive dressing - one that covers a wound, completely excluding it from air to enhance the healing process - was another revolutionary change. For literally centuries, applying cotton gauze or linen dressings has been the only treatment available and its success was only marginal. Today, DuoDERM dressing is the most widely used brand name of occlusive dressings used for the management of pressure sores and leg ulcers.
ConvaTec employs over 3,000 people in over 100 countries worldwide. Its operating units provide service and support for customers in every country within the European Community, as well as in the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and major markets of Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
