Java Chat Problems/Support
In the event of a "server unreachable"/"server connection failed"/"banned from server" message you need to change to a new Zirc server and reconnect.
To do this click on the "Confiq" button to return to the Java Chat setup box if you aren't already there (alternatively, click your browser refresh button to reload the page and start over.)
Then, click on the Server drop down box as shown in this picture, and select a new server. Ideally one which is geographically nearest to you.
(Please note: Screenshot shows Starchat servers, and the chat room is now located on Zirc servers, so therefore the drop down list has changed accordingly.)
The first server - irc.zirc.org - is a random connection server which connects 90% of people first time. The rest are listed by Country Location. I try to include a couple American, One Canadian, and two European servers. Sadly no Australian based Zirc servers currently exist but connecting to a European one will easily suffice, and connect you if you are in Australia.
You can leave the port number selection at 6667 if you wish. If you still have problems connecting, and cannot connect to any of the listed servers then try changing the port number to 7000 and going thru the list again.
NOTE: The list of servers available on the Zirc network is continually updated and changed (as indeed do all server networks, not just Zirc.) Therefore some servers in the available list may no longer be reachable, and whilst I do try to connect to all servers once every few months I'd be grateful if you could inform me of any dead server links you may find. Thanks.
The server says I'm "K-Lined".
This is a big problem which
A) isnt your fault or mine - and
B) may not be fixable.
If you are "K-lined" it means you and anyone else using your ISP (internet Service Provider) are banned from the network. This happens because the network gets so many complaints about users of the same ISP that they are left with no option but to ban the whole ISP from the network.
If you cannot connect to any of the listed Zirc servers because of a "K-line" ban then i'm afraid you cannot join us in #Ostomyland with that ISP connection. If you have a connection with a different ISP you will probably be able to connect with that connection fine.
The good news is that with Zirc being a small, clean(ie porn free), family based network, server bans and K-lines are very rare. i'm only aware of one K-line ban affecting #ostomyland in our two years on FEF.net - our previous IRC Network
Secondly, K-lines are temporary bans and can be removed easily by the network admins. If you were to contact Fefnet Administration explaining that the K-line ban was banning an innocent user they may well remove the ban for you to see if the abuse has been stopped.
Like I say, K-lines are rare but they are an important step towards making IRC safe for everyone by banning the idiots and nasty folks.
